The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle
A blossoming paradise awaits you on the sunny slopes east of Meran (where Empress Sissi once strolled about): 80 landscaped gardens from around the world have been laid out on 12 hectares: a Mediterranean sun garden, water and terraced gardens, forest gardens ... remember, the landscapes of South Tyrol, are home to a living cross-section of all the varied life forms that flourish below the Brenner Pass, from fields of grain to gall-oak forests.
3000 plant species and around 30 gardners to cultivate them. A marvel to behold, full of colour and life and bewitching fragrances. The Grotto and multi-media show, the Orchid House, and a geological mosaic, where you can walk across a representative sample of the many forms of rock found in Tyrol, are just a few highlights. The Garden Labyrinth, the Garden of the Senses, the Cottage Garden...
To top it all off, eleven artists were commissioned to create garden pavilions of their own, original design designed to present, in novel ways, the survival strategies of plant life - to the delight of children, too. Already in 2005, Trauttmansdorff was voted "Italy’s Most Beautiful Garden"!
